Meteor Mobile and eMobile, both units of Ireland’s former monopoly operator Eircom, have been ordered to pay a total of EUR30,000 (USD38,350) to two charities for breaching rules governing data protection in the Republic. At Dublin District Court, the pair pleaded guilty to multiple breaches involving the theft of two laptops from Eircom’s offices sometime between late-2011 and early-2012. The court fined the two units for failing to adequately protect personal data held on the two computers and for their failure to notify the Data Protection Commission of the data breach in good time.
