Smart Communications Inc, the mobile arm of Filipino telecoms giant Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), says it will start operating a full-blown commercial 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) service on 25 August. The cellco made the announcement on 17 August, a year after conducting its first LTE test deployments in various parts of the archipelago. Despite the fanfare, the cellco has confirmed it already has live LTE sites in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao and Boracay – all of which have been active for several months. At launch, Smart’s new 4G service is capable of delivering wireless speeds of 42Mbps, with parent company PLDT currently embarking on a PHP67.1 billion (USD1.58 billion) network upgrade programme, part of which will see over 9,500 Smart base stations across the country upgraded to 4G.
