CityCell launching GSM next year; approval promised upon fee payment at end of this month

14 Aug 2012

Bangladesh’s only CDMA-based mobile operator CityCell is set to launch GSM services in 2013 once it receives permission for the transition from the regulatory authorities, which has been promised upon receipt of the next installment of its 2G cellular licence renewal fee on 31 August 2012. Mehboob Chowdhury, CEO of CityCell, currently the market’s smallest cellco by subscribers, said it will take around six months to switch over from CDMA to GSM technology. Local press reports put the expected costs of rolling out a GSM network at BDT16 billion (USD196 million) for the company, which is part of the Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) group.
