Bahamian telecoms regulator the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) has issued its final determination on number portability (NP). The watchdog announced that both fixed and mobile NP (FNP and MNP respectively) will be made available ‘at the earliest technical and economic feasibility.’ The working group responsible for implementing NP has begun the process of selecting a provider to administer the service, having received four proposals by end-June 2012. The working group expects to have selected a provider by November 2012, with the telco to begin testing the following month. FNP is expected to come on line by May 2013, whilst MNP will be available from the launch of a second cellco when the monopoly of the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) ends in 2014.
