Tricom calls on Huawei for LTE upgrade

6 Jul 2012

Dominican Republic-based mobile network operator Tricom has revealed that it has selected Chinese vendor Huawei for a network upgrade project that will include the deployment of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. The cellco has confirmed that Huawei has been contracted for the implementation of systems utilising both CDMA 1x-EVDO and LTE technology, but it has not outlined a timeframe for the deployment of either.

As noted in TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Tricom is the smallest of the Dominican Republic’s four mobile network operators, with an estimated subscriber base of 620,000 at the end of March 2012, giving it a market share of 6.4%.
