Telia/Telenor venture and TDC win 800MHz spectrum in Denmark

27 Jun 2012

TT-Netvaerket, the Danish network sharing joint venture between Telia and Telenor, has won 800MHz spectrum which it says is a ‘major step’ in the build-out of its 4G mobile broadband network. The infrastructure sharing venture has paid DKK111.5 million (USD18.7 million) for 2×10MHz in the 800MHz band to complement its existing holdings at 2.6GHz. TT-Netvaerket has already deployed a network which covers 75% of Denmark’s population in the cities of Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg and Odense; Telia and Telenor offer services separately over the shared infrastructure.

Meanwhile, former monopoly operator and wireless market leader TDC has paid DKK628 million for four lots of paired 5MHz blocks (2×20MHz in total). Henrik Poulsen, president and CEO of TDC, said that the company had ‘obtained what are clearly the most attractive frequency blocks at a reasonable price’. While the TT-Netvaerket spectrum carries restrictions on where masts can be erected so as to avoid interference with TV broadcasts, there are no such restrictions for the spectrum won by TDC. Both TDC and the Telia/Telenor venture are now required to build out 4G networks covering more than 99% of the population.

The new 800MHz spectrum will enable the firms to serve a much wider area as the lower frequencies offer greater geographic coverage per base station. Jon Erik Haug, CEO of Telenor Denmark, commented: ‘Mobile broadband data communication will become more and more important for Danish telecom customers over the next few years. The spectrum we have acquired today will allow us to reach even more Danes with 4G data connections. So the 800MHz licence is a key element of fulfilling our ambition to create Denmark’s best network in terms of both voice and data.’
