Airtel Ghana continues fight against SIM box fraud

26 Jun 2012

Cellular operator Airtel Ghana has reported the discovery of the third SIM box fraud gang within a week as it looks to clamp down on the illegal routing of international calls. The firm says it has uncovered a syndicate operating two illegal SIM gateways in Accra. The gangs have been selling black market SIM cards which allow users to avoid international telephony charges by using voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) technology to terminate overseas calls as local traffic. Airtel says this type of fraud causes ‘enormous’ revenue losses.
