24 May 2012

Sunrise, Switzerland’s second largest cellco by subscribers has booked revenues of CHF509.3 million (USD535.9 million) for the three months ended 31 March 2012, up from CHF467.3 million in the corresponding period of 2011. The company’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) was CHF152.0 million, with an EBITDA margin of 29.8%, compared to CHF141.1 million and 30.2% a year earlier. Net profit for the period was CHF9.6 million, up from CHF217,000 twelve months earlier.

In operational terms, Sunrise ended the first quarter of 2012 with 2.123 million wireless subscribers, 1.132 million of which were on post-paid plans. Mobile ARPU was CHF43.5, however, a decrease from CHF44.7 at end-2011, though a slight increase compared to CHF41.9 seen in Q1 2011. Fixed voice subscriptions continued to decline, with 500,000 customers signed up to the service at the end of the period under review. Fixed internet services saw a slight increase year-on-year to 369,000 customers.

As noted by CommsUpdate, Sunrise inked a network upgrade agreement with Chinese vendor Huawei in late-April, which aims to capitalise on the company’s acquisition of additional Long Term Evolution (LTE) spectrum at the start of the year.

Sunrise CEO Oliver Steil commented on the company’s progress for first quarter of 2012: ‘Sunrise has kept up the high pace of 2011 and has made a successful start. With important product launches such as Sunrise TV, the choice of a new technology partner and our new mobile tariff portfolio which is going to be launched next week, we are well prepared for the coming months and years.’
