Profits jump 42% at AIS

Thailand’s largest cellco by subscribers, Advanced Info Service (AIS), has attributed a 42% year-on-year rise in first-quarter net profits to rising mobile data/internet and voice revenues from smartphone users. Net income for the three months ended 31 March 2012 was THB8.93 billion (USD290 million), up from THB6.27 billion in the same period of 2011, on quarterly revenues that climbed 13% year-on-year to THB35.18 billion. Voice revenues grew by 7.5% y-o-y while non-voice revenue jumped 32% over the same timeframe. Mobile data users reached 10.5 million in the quarter, up from nine million in 1Q11, and mobile data revenue grew by 69% y-o-y. At the end of March 2012 AIS reported a total of 34.137 million cellular network subscribers, up by 6.8% from 31.951 million a year earlier. There are more than 1.2 million 3G users on AIS’ 900MHz HSPA-based network.
