Thailand’s True Corp has launched what it claims to be the fastest broadband internet service in the country, a 200Mbps/15Mbps download/upload connection based on DOCSIS 3.0 HFC cable technology. The group’s ISP and fixed line division True Online is aiming at the high-end customer market with the new super-fast product, by charging THB9,999 (USD323) per month for the premium package, although this includes a premium TrueVisions pay-TV channel package bundled in for the first twelve months, as well as unlimited usage of the True group’s public Wi-Fi hotspot broadband access network. As reported by TelecomAsia, True’s existing premium DOCSIS 3.0-based service, offering 100Mbps/15Mbps maximum download/upload speeds, currently has 3,000 users and is available in the city centres of 14 out of Thailand’s 76 provinces, while True’s ADSL broadband network is available in 36 provinces. The company says that its DOCSIS-enabled HFC cable network technology can support speed upgrades to a maximum 400Mbps, with the potential for upgrades to 800Mbps in the future. Under an investment budget of THB8 billion (USD258 million) for network expansion taking it to the end of 2013, True aims to expand high speed broadband coverage to 60 provinces, with ‘nationwide’ coverage expected in 2014. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database says that True had 1.335 million broadband subscribers at the beginning of January 2012, up from 1.175 million a year earlier, and giving it a market share just below 35% (down by around three percentage points year-on-year). The group is the market leader in the Bangkok area, with roughly 60% of customers in the capital, but has recently branched out across the country under a plan to win provincial market share from rivals including TOT and Triple T Broadband.
