The sector’s total revenues climbed from CAD12.5 billion (USD12.6 billion) to CAD13.5 billion in the twelve months under review, with cable companies reporting turnover of CAD11 billion in the year ended August 2011, up by 8.2% from CAD10.1 billion a year earlier, which included television, internet access and telephone services. The number of Canadian households that subscribed to basic cable TV increased by 2.8% to reach 8.5 million. In the satellite segment, from 2010 to 2011, revenues for satellite and multipoint distribution system companies increased by 5.8%, or from CAD2.4 billion to CAD2.5 billion. Satellite and multipoint distribution companies had 2.9 million subscribers to their basic television service at the end of August 2011, which did not represent a significant change from the previous year, the CRTC reported.
