Digicel acquires Voila in Haiti

3 Apr 2012

The Jamaica-based pan-Caribbean mobile group Digicel has acquired the Haitian cellular operator Comcel, which offers services under the brand name ‘Voila’. Digicel, which is the largest mobile operator in Haiti with around 3.5 million subscribers, acquired Voila from US-based Trilogy International Partners. The purchase price was not disclosed and the transaction closed on 30 March 2012. Digicel says that Voila’s 850MHz operating frequencies are not compatible with its own networks, so the two firms will continue to operate separately. Voila stands in second place in the Haitian cellular market with around one million customers at the end of 2011. Colm Delves, Digicel Group CEO, said: ‘Digicel’s acquisition of Voila will see mobile users across Haiti benefiting from increased investment in even better mobile services and new technology in the future.’
