Oman’s second national telecoms operator Omani Qatari Telecommunications Company, also known as Nawras, has publicly demonstrated Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in the Sultanate, following previous tests over several months. Members of the public are able to trial the 4G technology by playing online games at the Muscat Grand Mall, which the company has also equipped with a fibre-optic broadband network. ‘We are very excited to show our wireless LTE technology in the Sultanate of Oman. During our trial period we have been more than pleased with the quality and speed of the 4G LTE service,’ said Nawras’ CTO Wolfgang Wemhoff, adding: ‘Nawras was first to provide 3G services back in 2007 and first again with WiMAX in 2010. Once again we are leading the way with cutting edge technology to provide pleasingly different services for our valued customers.’ Nawras, which is part-owned by Qatar Telecom (Qtel), competes in the Omani market with incumbent telco Oman Telecommunications (Omantel), which carried out its own demonstration of LTE in July 2010.
