UCC launches SIM registration scheme

6 Mar 2012

Uganda’s telecoms watchdog, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has launched a SIM registration programme intended to reduce phone-based crime. Wireless subscribers have until 1 March 2013 to register their SIM cards with their operators. After that date, unregistered SIMs will be deactivated. The government made assurances that customers’ personal information provided during the registration process would be safe, hoping to assuage concerns that the gathered data might be misused.
