Tax battle goes to arbiter

9 Feb 2012

A row over UGX136 billion (USD57.96 million) between South Africa-backed MTN Uganda and the Ugandan tax watchdog, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is due for arbitration next week, reports the Daily Monitor. The URA has accused MTN of not paying tax liability incurred between 2003 and 2007 relating to brand development, pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) tax on bonuses and penalties. MTN dismissed the allegations as an attempt to increase revenue collection. No details on the arbitrating authority were given.
