Ukrtelecom pleased with broadband growth

24 Jan 2012

Ukrainian fixed network operator Ukrtelecom has announced reaching a total of 1.343 million xDSL internet subscribers at the end of December 2011, an increase of 209,000 during the year and maintaining its position as the country’s largest fixed broadband provider. Marketing high speed services under the ‘OGO!’ banner, Ukrtelecom claims that the growth figure was the highest amongst Ukraine’s broadband operators, which it considers a significant achievement ‘under conditions of increasing competition’. The PSTN operator – privatised last year to Austrian investors – faces growing rivals in the internet segment including cellco Kyivstar (part of the Vimpelcom group) which is rapidly expanding its direct fibre broadband network. Ukrtelecom attributes its subscriber take-up in 2011 to active and ‘carefully thought out’ marketing strategies, in particular, a popular promotional offer of a UAH1 (USD0.12) DSL modem, and, at the end of the year, a ‘free 100 days internet’ campaign.
