Cellcos extend 3G sharing agreement in Czech Republic

19 Jan 2012

Telefonica O2 Czech Republic and T-Mobile CR have extended the remit of a network sharing agreement signed last year, which will see them launching an additional 306 shared base stations this year. In February 2011 the two cellcos signed a 3G network sharing agreement covering areas not already served by UMTS. The move was designed to bring mobile internet services to a number of new towns and cities when a pilot commercial operation was implemented in the second quarter of 2011. Under a six-year partnership pact, Telefonica O2 CR and T-Mobile CR said they intend to build up to 1,000 new base stations, with each operator committed to build at least 490. Trials initially kicked off in the cities of Dobris and Humpolec, with O2 agreeing to cover areas in the eastern part of the country, and T-Mobile the west. A total 337 base stations were subsequently launched in the O2 network and 337 by T-Mobile.
