The Communications Regulation Commission (CRC) of Bulgaria has announced that it has cancelled an auction to grant a mobile licence in the 2GHz band. In July 4G COM expressed an interest in the 15-year licence, followed by five other companies doing likewise. However, none of them paid the required participation deposit by the 14 November deadline, forcing the regulator to abandon the procedure. Critics of the auction say that numerous factors dissuaded operators from applying, including Bulgaria’s already high mobile penetration, the cost of the licence, and the fact that the winner of the concession was expected to focus primarily on mobile internet only.
