Four million smartphones to be sold this year, says AIS marketing man

29 Nov 2011

Gross sales of smartphones in Thailand are projected to reach approximately four million units this year, up from around three million in 2010, driven by the recent launches of expanded 3G 850MHz/900MHz networks by cellcos AIS, True Move and DTAC, according to AIS’s senior vice-president for marketing, Titipong Khiewpaisal, who was quoted by the Bangkok Post. Overall mobile internet users would reach ‘16 million by the end of this year,’ said Titipong, who added: ‘We expect smartphone sales to grow at a slower pace to at least 4.5 million units next year due to anticipated declining purchasing power as a result of floods.’ Titipong also said AIS’s data users surged by 71% year-on-year in July-September 2011, giving it a total of 7.5 million data users at the end of the quarter, or roughly half of all mobile internet users in the country according to the executive’s reckoning.
