DNA outlines recent mobile network expansion, upgrades

28 Sep 2011

Finnish mobile network operator DNA Finland has announced plans to construct a number of new base stations as well as to enhance DC-HSPA+ coverage with a view to ensuring its network copes with increased traffic volumes. The operator has said that its 3G network – which it claims now covers more than five million Finns – will be further expanded, with DNA listing the most recent locations at which coverage has either been added or extended, including: the city of Oulu, the town of Raahe, and the municipalities of Liminka and Haukipudas in the province of North Ostrobothnia; Kotka in the south-eastern province of Kymenlaakso; Helsinki, Vantaa and the town of Porvoo in Uusimaa; the city of Hameenlinna and the municipality of Janakkala in Kanta-Hame; and a number of other cities, towns and municipalities in the provinces of South Karelia, Varsinais-Suomi, Satakunta, Paijat-Hame, Pirkanmaa, Central Ostrobothnia and Lapland.

DNA meanwhile pointed in particular to its network upgrade in Hameenlinna, where it said it ‘now utilises some of the most sophisticated network technology in the world.’ Having introduced a software-based implementation of MultiStandard Radio mixed mode technology in early September, DNA claimed that it was ‘the first implementation of its kind in the world, as far as DNA is aware’.

Alongside the construction of new 3G base stations, with DNA having introduced DC-HSPA+ technology to around 300 of its existing cell sites earlier this year, the operator has said that it expects to extend the footprint of the higher-speed technology during the autumn and winter months.
