Eircom provides details on first areas to receive fibre in EUR100m rollout

9 Sep 2011

Irish PTO Eircom has published information on the first locations across the country to be covered by its EUR100 million (USD140 million) rollout of fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and, in some cases, fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology. The incumbent is looking to reach one million homes with fibre over the next four years, and work is expected to begin this autumn and on into the summer of 2012. Initially, Eircom is targeting communities in six counties, as well as major cities including Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. The targeted areas include: Mervue (Galway); Douglas (Cork); Dooradoyle (Limerick); Tallaght, Ballyboden, Palmerstown, Swords, Donabate Co Dublin; Clonee, Co Meath; and Letterkenny, Co Donegal. A total of 100,000 households will be covered in Phase 1, with end users seeing connections speeds of 40Mbps and higher.
