SaskTel to begin LTE deployment next year

2 Sep 2011

Saskatchewan full-service telco SaskTel has announced that it has begun work on planning, infrastructure development and internal system work towards the deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband networks in the third quarter of 2012. Bill Boyd, Minister Responsible for SaskTel was quoted by Newswire: ‘SaskTel has a solid technology evolution plan that will ensure Saskatchewan residents continue to benefit from the most advanced wireless technology available. The initial LTE phones will be compatible with the 4G network and will seamlessly transmit voice over the 4G network and data over LTE until LTE is set up for both voice and data.’ Phase 1 of the project will cover Regina and Saskatoon and surrounding areas, with other urban and rural areas to be added in 2013. The company also expects to offer LTE for voice services in 2013.
