BTC weathers storm

The Bahamas Telecommunication Company (BTC) is reportedly assessing the damage caused by hurricane Irene to its network and services. Current estimates suggest that 80% of its wireless customers were able to receive continuous service through the storm, compared to 90% of landlines. BTC’s vice president of marketing, Marlon Johnson claims that problems occurred on Abaco, Eleuthera, Cat Island, Exuma, Acklins and Long Island, mostly as a result of power outages on those islands, although there was inevitable damage to towers and lines. Whilst the cell sites have back-up batteries, these are only a short term measure; the longer the islands go without mains power, the more likely it is that phone lines will become inoperative. Whilst the financial cost of the damage has not yet been calculated, maintenance teams have been dispatched to the worst hit areas to restore service as much as possible.
