According to IT News Africa, Mozambique’s Ministry of Science and Technology has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with mCel – the country’s largest mobile operator by subscribers – to construct a series of community-orientated multimedia centres in rural locations. The MZN7.2 billion (USD260.4 million) deal will see mCel extend rural internet connectivity to six as-yet-unnamed Mozambican districts; the rollout is scheduled to take place over a period of three years. mCel president Teodato Hunguana also indicated that a number of existing technology centres in Nacaroa, Guru and Zambezia are expected to be re-launched as part of the same project.
