Vodafone Ireland bolstered by strong smartphone sales

Irish mobile operator Vodafone Ireland reported strong demand for smartphones, adding a net 76,000 registered users in the second quarter of the year for a total of 530,000 devices on its network by 30 June. Moreover, the group said its broadband business performed well in the quarter, adding a net 7,900 new customers for a total of 366,600 by end-June. Vodafone’s blended average revenue per user (ARPU) increased by 1.9% quarter-on-quarter in 2Q11, although the cellco noted the figure was down 6.3% on the same period of 2010. Minutes of use (MOU) climbed 1.9% q-o-q to 267 minutes in 2Q, and customers sent around 15% more SMS per user when compared to the same quarter a year ago.
