CAT-True 800MHz 3G approval given; now needs HSPA equipment permission

30 Jun 2011

State-owned CAT Telecom has received regulatory permission to use 800MHz frequencies in the provision of commercial 3G W-CDMA/HSPA services, as part of its January 2011 tie-up with True Move to roll out HSPA-based services across Thailand. Local newspaper The Nation reported that a state inquiry to assess the legality of the complicated retail/wholesale deals between CAT and True – the new owner of the former Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia CDMA network – should be finished ‘in 45 days’, although a verdict is thought likely to be delayed until after upcoming elections. CAT maintains that it will begin reselling 3G capacity to True (which entered into the partnership via subsidiaries Real Move and Real Future) as previously scheduled for late-August this year, but it must first gain permission to install and operate HSPA equipment.
