Vodafone launches 3G network in north Fiji

23 Jun 2011

Fijian mobile operator Vodafone has launched 3G mobile services in the northern areas of Labasa and Savusavu thanks to a FJD20 million (USD11.4 million) investment. Vodafone Fiji managing director Aslam Khan confirmed that the cellco has deployed nine 3G base transceiver stations, including five in Labasa (covering Labasa Town and suburbs including Delailabasa, Tuatua and Wailevu), and four in Savusavu (the latest being its FJD1.7 million BTS at Urata).

The cellco’s latest 3G launch was attended by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama who called for empowerment and connectivity for all Fijians in the wake of failures by previous administrations. ‘I will later this year launch the country’s first National Broadband Policy,’ the Prime Minister added.
