Airtel Congo rolls out 49 new BTS, reaches 5m users

Airtel DRC has expanded its network with 49 new base transceiver stations (BTS) since it made a USD400 million investment to make ‘communication accessible to all’ in December 2010. The director general of Airtel DRC, Antoine Pambaro made the statement on 2 June, whilst also announcing that it was the first cellco in the DRC to reach five million subscribers. Airtel also began a new promotion, a dual SIM pack offering cheap calls between the two numbers.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Airtel has grown its subscriber base by 40% since December 2009, from 3.567 million to its total of five million announced this month.
