Huawei to upgrade Warid network

20 Jun 2011

Warid Telecom has inked a deal with Chinese equipment supplier Huawei to upgrade and expand its network. The upgrade will double the network’s capacity increase coverage, and is expected to include the rollout of Warid’s first 3G network. Warid’s CEO, Madhur Taneja said ‘as a fast-growing network, there is need for us to quickly adapt new technological advances in order to serve our subscribers with both quality and modern technology’. Warid is the third largest wireless operator in Uganda by subscribers, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, with 14% of the market share and two million subscribers at the end of March 2011. Far from being ‘fast-growing’, Warid’s market share has declined from 16% in December 2009, and subscriber figures have remained at the two million mark since December 2010.
