Future uncertain for Costa Rica’s GSM network

10 Jun 2011

Costa Rica’s state-owned telecoms company ICE Cellular has not renewed its GSM licence, but according to InsideCostaRica has announced that the network will stay live. Local news reports say that ICE leased the network from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) in 2005 but that they expired in 2010. ICE was due to renew this agreement this month, but has as yet failed to do so. ICE closed down its TDMA network earlier this year, and it feared that any further shut downs would not only overwhelm its 3G network, but seriously tarnish its public image. According to Telegeography’s GlobalComms Database, ICE Cellular will experience its first taste of competition in September with the launch of rival wireless networks by Telefonica and America Movil.
