TOT announces expanded 3G launch by November

9 Jun 2011

Thai state-run telco TOT will launch an expanded 3G mobile service in 17 provinces by November this year, with ‘nationwide’ rollout scheduled for 2012, the company’s president Arnon Tubtiang told the Bangkok Post, adding that the new network will offer speeds up to six times faster than TOT’s existing W-CDMA/HSPA service covering Bangkok. The new timetable follows delays to the award of a rollout contract to the SL Consortium, a partnership between Loxley, Samart, Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks, after legal challenges to its transparency. 1,722 HSPA base stations are due to be installed in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani, with a further 1,686 to be deployed in 13 provinces including Phuket, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. An additional 1,314 base stations are scheduled to be rolled out across the country by the end of 2012.
