Cabletica launches MVNO

8 Jun 2011

Televisora de Costa Rica, which operates popular TV channel Teletica Canal 7 and cableco Cabletica, has launched an MVNO under the Tuyo Movil brand name. Tuyo Movil will operate over the network of the country’s sole wireless network operator, Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), and will offer both voice and data services nationwide on a pre-paid basis. Customers may subscribe to the Tuyo service at Gallo retail stores across the country.

In a separate, but related story, ICE has told telecoms regulator Sutel that it may not be ready to implement mobile number portability (MNP) by December, as previously promised. ICE maintains that it still needs to define the technical and tariff aspects of MNP. The issue will be important for the country’s two new wireless licensees, Spain’s Telefonica and Mexico’s America Movil, which bid USD95 million and USD77 million respectively for concessions in January this year. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, both are expected to launch by the end of 2011.
