AIS launching ‘AirNet’ home wireless broadband service

20 May 2011

Thailand’s largest cellular operator by subscribers, Advanced Info Service (AIS), is planning to launch a new service called AirNet to provide wireless broadband internet access in homes, using free and unlicensed 5GHz band spectrum. A spokesperson for the cellco said that AirNet will be aimed at offering an alternative for customers in upcountry regions where fixed line facilities are limited, although the service will have limited coverage so as not to overlap with 3G mobile services, with a modest target of attracting 10,000 customers. Meanwhile, AIS is aiming for a commercial launch of 3G services using its existing 900MHz band in Bangkok and nine provinces in the third quarter of this year. AIS already provides limited 3G UMTS-900 services and has invested THB2.5 billion (USD83 million) to roll out 1,800 W-CDMA/HSPA base stations for a full commercial launch.
