China Telecom ‘gets foot in the door’ of Thailand, but not connected to True

19 May 2011

The Bangkok Post reports that China Telecom has established a local representative office in Thailand’s capital, in a partnership with China Communications Service of Hong Kong as part of its strategy to expand its presence in Southeast Asia. Responding to speculation that the move had something to do with a prospective purchase of a stake in Thai mobile operator True Move, Suphachai Chearavanont, the parent group True Corp’s CEO, said the Chinese fixed line, broadband and CDMA giant’s actions were unrelated to plans by True Move to seek a foreign strategic partner. However, China Telecom is likely to join the international roaming service or international gateway provider segments in Thailand, he said. Deng Xiaofeng, the board chairman and chief executive of China Telecom (Hong Kong) International Ltd, said China Telecom would use the Thai office to offer diversified communications solutions to local operators.
