True Universal launching 100Mbps internet access in Pattaya

17 May 2011

True Universal Convergence, a subsidiary of Thai integrated communications group True Corp, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Mayor of Pattaya to expand broadband network access to ‘the entire city’ and also to launch ultra-high speed 100Mbps internet services for Pattaya residents. The 100Mbps connections will support applications such as High Definition (HD) online video streaming as well as other online activities simultaneously. True Universal has so far earmarked investment of THB350 million (USD11.5 million) for the project and plans to launch a full commercial 100Mbps service in September 2011 covering 70,000 households. True Corp, via broadband/fixed line division True Online, has previously rolled out internet services in Pattaya with maximum connection speeds of 16Mbps as well as installing 400 public Wi-Fi hotspots around the city, a major tourist destination. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that True has offered HFC cable broadband in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area (BMA) since 2001, alongside its xDSL and LAN/FTTx services, but is now expanding to other areas, and launched commercial DOCSIS 3 cable modem services with a range of speed options between 10Mbps and 100Mbps in March 2011. True had 814,000 broadband subscribers at the end of December 2010, with less than 20% of its users outside the BMA, but the company says that this year will see launches of DOCSIS 3-based services in several other cities. By the end of 2011 True aims to cover 26 cities with its broadband services and has earmarked investment of around THB9.5 billion over the next three years.
