TransTelecom loses WiMAX licence

21 Apr 2011

The Bulgarian telecoms regulator, the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC), has revoked the WiMAX licence of bankrupt telco and internet service provider TransTelecom. The regulator’s move leaves the country with just two active WiMAX operators, Max Telecom and Nexcom, with the former claiming the bulk of Bulgaria’s 20,000 WiMAX subscribers. A third company, Carrier BG, has held a 3.5GHz WiMAX permit since 2007 but has still to start trading; the CRC is thought to be considering revoking this licence also. According to TeleGeography’s 4G Research Service, TransTelecom launched WiMAX services under the brand name 1one in mid-2008 using 802.16e equipment supplied by Huawei. It announced its bankruptcy earlier this year.
