Zesko (Ziggo) to go mobile in 2011

18 Mar 2011

Dutch cableco Zesko Holding (Ziggo) is readying itself for the launch of mobile services in the country probably before the end of this year, according to the national regulator Opta as reported by Telecompaper. In early-February this year the regulator assigned Ziggo with a block of 100,000 mobile numbers, following a substantial review of the operator’s plans. It is understood that under Opta’s rules, the requesting party (i.e. Ziggo) must show it will use the mobile numbers allocated ‘within one year’. Ziggo will most likely enter into an MVNO-type agreement or roaming agreement to begin marketing mobile services to its own customers whilst it begins work on the deployment of its own mobile broadband network. Last year Ziggo, together with UPC Nederland, acquired 2×20MHz of spectrum in the 2.6GHz band for such services. Ziggo’s block of mobile numbers begin with the code 06 86-5.
