Ukrtelecom’s ‘local prices for local people’ to boost DSL base

10 Feb 2011

The chairman of Ukraine’s dominant fixed network operator Ukrtelecom, George Dzekon, has revealed plans to increase the operator’s number of fixed broadband subscribers from its current total of 1.1 million to 1.5 million. Dzekon said that the incumbent had responded to small but well-established regional broadband operators competing fiercely in individual cities, by varying its xDSL service tariffs greatly, depending on the region. On a nationwide scale, the chairman said he considered that the only rival which could compete effectively was Kyivstar (which is in the process of rolling out FTTx high speed broadband in cities across the country whilst integrating the operations of both Beeline Ukraine and Golden Telecom under the umbrella of group parent Vimpelcom).
