DTAC posts record high annual profits

8 Feb 2011

Digital Total Access Communications (DTAC), the third largest cellco in Thailand by subscribers, has reported a record high net profit for 2010 of THB10.9 billion (USD353 million), up 64.6% from the previous year. Consolidated revenues for the year grew at a rate of 10.1% to reach THB72.4 billion, driven mainly by the recovery of voice traffic, strong growth in value added services (VAS), and a sharp increase in sale of handsets, according to the company’s statement. DTAC, a subsidiary of Norway’s Telenor, added that 2010 was also a ‘tipping point’ for mobile internet services, take-up of which is being driven by the popularity of smartphones and social networking applications. The cellco said it believes that the growth momentum for mobile internet will carry on into 2011, despite the suspension of the country’s 3G licence auction. TeleGeography notes that DTAC recently received permission to expand 3G ‘trial’ services in the 850MHz band under its existing build-transfer-operate (BTO) agreement with state-run CAT Telecom, in the absence of 2100MHz concessions. DTAC’s total subscriber base grew to 21.6 million at 31 December 2010, after it added around two million net new subscribers in the year.
