Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp (NTT) reported third-quarter net profit of JPY143.1 billion (USD1.74 billion) for the three months ended 31 December 2010, up 4.6% from JPY136.8 billion a year earlier, driven by a solid performance from its fibre-optic business and data services for corporate users. The telco said operating profit increased 12% year-on-year to JPY338.4 billion on revenue that inched up 0.6% to JPY2.544 trillion from JPY2.528 trillion. NTT said it grew its broadband subscriber base by 8.6%, to 17.7 million users, and improved its average revenue per user (ARPU) by 2.1% which, along with growth in some new businesses, helped offset lower voice revenues. NTT said its fixed line business lost a net 9.1% of its customer base, reducing the total to 35.7 million. NTT’s management is sticking with its full year guidance of a 1.6% rise in net profit to JPY500 billion, a 5.6% rise in operating profit to JPY1.18 trillion and a 0.4% drop in revenue to JPY10.14 trillion.
