Gamtel Revs up A-grade internet service

28 Jan 2011

State-run Gambia Telecommunications Company (Gamtel) has announced the launch of a new range of high speed wireless internet access products and services, after completing an upgrade of its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO fixed-wireless network with Revision A technology. Gamtel said on Wednesday that the speed boost given by the upgrade can be enjoyed by users of its existing EV-DO data services/products including PC datacards and wireless terminals. It also announced the launch of three new products specifically designed for the Rev A network: the ‘3G Express USB Stick’ wireless dongle modem for laptop/PC users (supporting peak theoretical download speed of 3.1Mbps), the ‘3G Bantaba’ wireless router (for connecting up to ten computers) and the ‘3G Nafaa’ USB modem. Although the announcement claimed that the new 3G-speed internet range would ‘address the issue of affordability’, the company’s website does not yet display pricing details.
