Plans by the Irish regulator the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) to auction off valuable radio spectrum for broadband and mobile services in late 2011 could net the exchequer at least EUR250 million (USD340 million), says the watchdog’s chairman Alex Chisholm. The figure could rise higher if ComReg forges ahead with plans to auction off further bands of spectrum, which it is now considering, he added. Interest in the licences, which are valid until 2030, have already been expressed by eleven telcos and networking firms, including all four mobile incumbents, Eircom, Digiweb, Imagine, UPC, RTE, Ericsson and Qualcomm.
