Wireless licences attract usual faces

15 Dec 2010

America Movil and Telefonica have formally entered bids for wireless network operator licences in Costa Rica, bringing the country closer to liberalising its mobile sector. According to telecomsregulator Sutel, both companies submitted USD3.5 million deposits to guarantee their participation. ‘We have achieved something very positive [with the bids],’ Sutel President George Miley told Reuters. ‘It’s the beginning of a new era for the country.’ Terms of the new licences require a minimum investment of USD70 million. The winners are expected to be announced in February 2011 with networks launched commercially the following September, Miley said.
