Portugal Telecom achieves 100Gbps fibre connection

29 Nov 2010

Portugal Telecom (PT) has demonstrated fibre-optic transmission speeds of 100Gbps between Lisbon and Porto – the highest speeds achieved in the country to date. The technical trial, which was engineered by French systems provider Alcatel-Lucent, showcased end-to-end optical/IP 100Gbps connectivity across an existing Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) link that covers the 400km distance between the two cities. For the demonstration, PT used Alcatel-Lucent’s 1626 Light Manager enhanced with 100Gbps next-generation coherent technology and the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router, equipped with 100GE cards for IP/MPLS routing and services.

Alfredo Baptista, CTO of Portugal Telecom commented: ‘In keeping with industry trends, we’re expecting that video will account for well over half of our consumer traffic. This kind of demand requires higher speeds and higher capacity technology. This fully integrated IP/optical 100Gbps connection – together with the previously announced evolution of our fibre access network with GPON and 10GPON technologies – is one further step towards a Next Generation Network (NGN) with full end-to-end IP connectivity. These high quality standards and very high speeds are unique characteristics not replicable on other type of technologies’. Portugal Telecom recently reaffirmed its commitment to its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network, and announced that it aims to cover a further 600,000 homes – in addition to the one million homes already serviced by its network. The planned expansion will utilise around 300,000km of fibre, and reach over 50% of Portuguese homes.
