CSL launches LTE for corporates; consumer launch next quarter

Hong Kong mobile operator CSL has launched Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, initially only for corporations which participated in trials, with a full consumer launch scheduled for the first quarter of 2011. The firm announced to reporters yesterday that its integrated LTE/DC-HSPA+ network, built in partnership with ZTE, had coverage of 50% of the population, enabling download speeds up to four times faster than HSPA+, with corporate services to be followed by mass-market offerings in the next quarter when sufficient LTE-ready devices would be ready for sale. Companies will be using USB wireless modems supplied by ZTE and Samsung to access services such as mobile high-definition videoconferencing, mobile office applications, mobile real-time monitoring/imaging, mobile interactive marketing/advertising and cloud computing applications. Consumers can expect CSL to push advanced services such as 3DTV, interactive gaming and e-learning applications. The cellco, a subsidiary of Australia’s Telstra, also demonstrated voice-over-LTE calling earlier this month. CSL’s CEO, Joseph O’Konek, disclosed that its data traffic increased four-fold in the twelve months to September 2010, and now comprises more than 80% of its total network traffic. Weigui Hou, chairman of ZTE, commented on the deployment of the world’s first network based on the LTE/DC-HSPA+ configuration: ‘Hong Kong’s unique density and geography have made it one of the world’s most challenging environments in which to deploy a large-scale wireless network.’
