Minister calls on NCA to stop Vodafone Ghana from killing off ISPs

24 Nov 2010

Ghana Business News quotes the country’s Minister of Communications, Haruna Iddrisu, as bemoaning what he calls Vodafone Ghana’s practice of ‘killing off’ rival internet service providers (ISPs) and has called on the National Communications Authority (NCA) to do more to stop them. The minister accuses Vodafone of acting both as wholesaler and retailer by selling bandwidth to ISPs while it runs its own chain of retail internet cafes, which are more efficient than those of the ISPs and thus effectively harms their businesses. Iddrisu says that a number of ISPs have filed official complaints with him and having agreed that their concerns are valid, he has now asked the NCA to investigate the matter and if necessary, bring Vodafone to book.
