No light at end of tunnel for PCCW’s CDMA2000 coverage delays

18 Nov 2010

Hong Kong Telecoms regulator OFTA has accepted a request from PCCW to waive CDMA2000 mobile licence coverage obligations set in 2007, which it had been scheduled to meet by 20 November 2010. PCCW is no longer obligated to roll out coverage of: all Mass Transit Railway (MTR) stations and adjoining tunnels; all Kowloon Canton Railway (KCR) stations and adjoining tunnels; nor all Airport Express Railway stations and adjoining tunnels. In addition it now only has to cover six road tunnels instead of ten. PCCW said it has encountered problems reaching agreements over fees with landowners to cover MTR stations and four private road tunnels, but added that it will continue its efforts to meet the full original coverage targets with its 1xEV-DO-based network.
