LITC enlists Huawei Marine to construct 420km submarine cable

16 Nov 2010

The Libyan International Telecom Company (LITC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Libyan Post, Telecom and Information Technology Company (LPTIC), has selected Huawei Marine Networks to construct its ‘Silphium’ fibre-optic submarine cable. The 420km cable will cross the Mediterranean Sea, connecting Darnah, in northern Libya with Chania, Greece. The cable will have an initial capacity of 7×10Gbps and a maximum theoretical capacity of 1.2Tbps. The system will provide route protection for Libya’s existing international communication channels, and also offer bandwidth improvement designed to satisfy the increasing demand for multi-national communications. Huawei Marine Networks will reportedly provide an end-to-end turnkey solution for Silphium; the project is due for completion in mid-2011.

LITC CEO Kamal Farhat commented: ‘As our first wholly-owned international submarine cable, Silphium is a key milestone in our international network development strategy. It not only connects Libya and the European internet hubs, provides a highly desirable diverse route across the Mediterranean, but also connects Libya’s existing next generation broadband network to enable direct internet access to the severely underserved countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Huawei Marine’s successful experience in Libya and the Mediterranean area proved it is a reliable partner’. Huawei Marine CEO Nigel Bayliff added: ‘This is the second project we have undertaken over two years in Libya. I am very happy that we can cooperate with LITC and together contribute to Libya’s telecommunication development. We have world-leading Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technologies and comprehensive capabilities for submarine engineering. I am confident that we will deliver the state-of-the-art Silphium on schedule’.
