Miscounting its chickens earns Hutch paltry fine

28 Sep 2010

Hutchison 3G Ireland (3) has accepted a fine of EUR1,500 from regulator ComReg for incorrectly stating its number of active pre-paid subscribers since 2006, reports the Irish Times. The cellco has also agreed to have its subscriber data independently verified for the next twelve months. ‘This error was identified by 3 and ComReg was subsequently notified. The error does not affect Hutchison Whampoa’s reports of 3 Ireland’s financial performance and customer numbers,’ stated the operator. A report was discredited which claimed that subscriber figures at the Irish unit were mistakenly multiplied after a memo was circulated with the heading ‘Subscribers: Dublin’. Analysts also dismissed a rumour that totals were grossly understated in one quarter due to the misinterpretation of another memo which carried the heading ‘3 Customers’.
