9 Sep 2010

Chinese vendor Huawei has announced the deployment of what it claims is the world’s largest next generation Home Location Register (HLR) in three of Pakistan’s major cities: Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. According to, the vendor has deployed the HLR for Norwegian telecoms group Telenor’s Pakistani subsidiary, Telenor Pakistan, saying that the solution will allow the cellco to improve network efficiency, simplify its operations and reduce operating and transmission costs by 60% and 70% respectively. Huawei also said that the HLR also offers data sharing and inter-working platforms for service convergence, capabilities which it claimed would allow Telenor to quickly provide new services to its subscribers.

Telenor Pakistan is the country’s second largest cellco by subscribers, with TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database reporting it had a customer base of 23.79 million at end-June 2010, representing a market share of 24.1%.
